Two Thousand Seventeen may be remembered as the year of confusion and deceitfulness. Not that we haven’t had confusing years in the past, but this was probably the year in which we have had more distrust, dishonesty, and deception than ever before. No one could be believed. Our politicians have always been dishonest, but not in such a blatant way. Most in the media are hell-bent on destroying a President, all kinds of stories have been fabricated some true. some false. Politicians are falsifying stories against each other, like never before. The Russians and Chinese trying to influence our elections. Then we have had numerous terrorist attacks in many places, making people uneasy when they go to public events. One might call it a very perplexing year.
Why have we had more unhappy people rising up a protesting against our Nation, our Government, and our way of life? Not since the late 60’a have we had so many demonstrations against our Nation! We have had protests at our universities because the students didn’t believe in some of the beliefs of a certain speaker. Demonstrations against our Police, because a group of people thought they were discriminated against and in some cases they were. NFL players not wanting to stand for our National Anthem. Then we have white supremacist demonstrating because they felt they were being discriminated against. Seems like we have had more unhappy or despondent people this past year, than ever before
I feel like a lot of this is brought on by our political leaders, our media and their fake news, and the popularity of social media, where anyone can write anything and say it’s true. A person gets on Facebook or Twitter, and because he’s agitated at some group or a person, he can start a rumor and before you know everyone is repeating it as if it were true. The way things are now, a person has to check every story or media outlet to find out if something is true or false. Several years ago we had a lot of trust in our Nation. I think more people were prone to honesty and trustworthiness, in the past, than they are today.
One Thing – Trust
Author Stephen M.R. Corey wrote years ago “There is one thing that is common in every individual, relationship, team, family, organization, nation, economy, and civilization throughout the world – one thing which if removed will destroy the most powerful government and the most thriving economy.” That one thing is trust.
When you trust someone, you have confidence in their honesty. You can relax around them and you have peace of mind. Just think about how you act around someone you mistrust, it changes your personality completely. What happens to a marriage after trust is lost? Each of us naturally turns away from someone we can’t trust and this is particularly true in business. We all survive by selling something, a service, a product, or a skill. One of the main obstacles in selling someone your service is a lack of trust. If you can’t trust the person or organization you are doing business with, You’re Done!
When I look back at the men who wrote our constitution, founded our country, and made all the sacrifices they made – I realize we have a lot to be thankful for. They argued with each other, debated, and questioned each other’s ideas and beliefs, a lot of them ended up bankrupt, but they always trusted each other. We can ask, what happened that we started out with a lot of trust and honesty, and it has gotten to what it is today, where nobody believes anybody.
It took a long time to get to this point. Over the years, since our founding, little by little, we have eroded the trust we are supposed to have in each other. It’s up to our leaders, our teachers, all the religious leaders and parents to start educating our young people about honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness. Year by year we might build up the trust we had before in our Nation.
We have been focusing too much this past year on all the negative things about the World and our Nation. It would be nice if we could look at all the greatness this Nation has to offer. This past century the leaders and the people have created one of the greatest nations in the world. We have a lot to be thankful for and maybe we should be talking about all the good we have in the World today. Because of the Freedoms guaranteed us thru our Constitution, we have been given the opportunity to create a free enterprise system that is the source of prosperity and the foundation of economic liberty!
The Internet was created here. What about great companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and Google. We have some of the most efficient factories, automobile plants, farms, economic system, and manufacturing plants ever built. Our Seniors are better-taken care here than any other place. The United States economy is responsible for one-quarter of the world economy. Our innovations have been adopted by Nations all over the World, thus creating, for the most part, a better place for a lot of people to live.
If you turn on the TV and pay attention to all the gibberish that is being put out, you no doubt will come away depressed and not trust anyone. Garbage in Garbage Out. One of my favorite Bible verses – Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about those things.
Millions of immigrants who were fleeing oppressive, underdeveloped countries and Dictatorships, all dreaming of a better life, were allowed into
our Nation to help develop our country. Yes, we have had our blemishes in the past – the treatment of the Native Americans, African Americans, and other minorities are not something to be proud of. We may fall short but we must keep striving for greatness!
I guess what I’m trying to say is this next year we should make every effort to work toward the good that’s in this world. Start helping your neighbor, help create a better Nation for our children, be truthful to everyone, and trust people more. When you really look at it we have a lot to be thankful for and in spite of all the negative things we hear about every day, we have the greatest Nation ever built!! Look forward to hearing from you.
